What should I consider when buying a baby lambskin?
As with anything you buy for your child, it's worth doing your research beforehand. Below are the most important points to consider when buying a baby lambskin.
Gentle Tanning and Absence of Pesticides
First, it's important to consider the tanning of the baby lambskin. Websites like the German Öko Test have conducted extensive tests on baby lambskin, considering various criteria. One of the most important factors is the gentle tanning of the lambskins and the absence of pesticides. Elevated levels of substances such as cypermethrin indicate that the sheep were treated with this tick repellent during their lives.
Although cypermethrin is effective against ticks, it is not suitable for your baby. In general, pesticides should be avoided in baby products. Therefore, always make sure that your baby lambskin is certified. This way, you can be sure that you are choosing the best quality and can place the baby lambskin in the stroller with a clear conscience.
Warnings and Usage Instructions
After ensuring that the lambskin is of high quality, it is important to use your baby lambskin correctly. A baby lambskin should not be used as a mattress topper in the baby bed, as the baby might press its face into the soft surface during sleep. Therefore, a baby lambskin is much better suited as a play mat or as a sleeping mat in the stroller, where the child is under your supervision.
Furthermore, it is important to care for the lambskin regularly – especially if it is a baby lambskin. Care instructions are usually provided on the back of the lambskin. Our baby lambskins are medically tanned, which means that, unlike ordinary lambskins, they can withstand a wash cycle in the washing machine. Tips for washing your baby lambskin can be found below.

Lambskin for the Stroller
We are frequently asked whether it is advisable to put a lambskin in the stroller and what advantages or potential problems might arise. Below, we have answered the most important questions about lambskins for strollers so that you can make the right decision for your baby.
Why should I put a lambskin in the stroller?
There are several reasons why you should put a lambskin in the stroller. The first reason is that lambskin is very soft, and your baby will lie particularly comfortably on it. The second reason is that real baby lambskin is breathable and warm. This is due to the natural structure of the fur, which both retains heat and has an insulating effect.
However, these two reasons are not the only benefits of a lambskin in the stroller. Thanks to its natural air cushion, a lambskin has a temperature-regulating effect that develops as soon as your baby lies on it. This way, the lambskin provides soothing warmth in winter and offers a cooling effect in summer. If your baby gets too warm, for example due to high humidity, the lambskin quickly absorbs excess sweat and ensures a pleasant feeling.
In addition to moisture, a real baby lambskin has another advantage: it also absorbs odors. However, this doesn't have to be a disadvantage. If you want your baby to feel secure from the beginning, you can sleep on the lambskin before birth. This way, the fur will absorb your scent, and your baby will immediately feel safe and secure.
Temperature-regulating properties of a baby lambskin
As already mentioned, a real baby lambskin has a variety of natural properties that have been developed by sheep over centuries – and transferred to the fur so that they can benefit your baby today. Particularly noteworthy are the temperature-regulating properties, which we will explain in more detail below.
Why does a baby lambskin help against cold?
A real baby lambskin provides excellent protection against cold because the cold cannot penetrate the stroller from above, but mainly from below. Therefore, a thick blanket or warm duvet is not enough to effectively protect your little treasure from the cold. A warming underlay made of the softest lambskin is particularly important to protect your baby from the cold coming from below.
A baby lambskin is a natural product and has been specially developed to protect against wind and weather, so you can be sure that it will optimally protect your baby from the cold. The dense wool keeps warm on one side and simultaneously protects against cold on the other side. The breathable baby lambskin ensures that your baby never gets too hot. Thus, our baby lambskin becomes a reliable companion in the cold months.
Does a baby lambskin not get too warm in summer?
Perhaps you are now wondering whether a baby lambskin does not get too warm in summer. The answer is: No. Thanks to its natural air cushion, the real lambskin regulates the temperature in the stroller. Just as the baby lambskin provides pleasant warmth in winter, it has a cooling effect in summer. However, it is possible that your baby may still get too warm in very hot temperatures. This always depends on your baby's well-being and what feels comfortable to them.
It is therefore important to dress your baby appropriately for the season. If your baby does not feel comfortable on the lambskin in the stroller in summer, you can take the fur out of the stroller and use it as a play mat on the floor instead. There, your baby can lie more freely and romp around on the soft, cozy surface of the lambskin.
Caring for and Washing Baby Lambskin
Baby lambskins are wonderful natural products that become the perfect companion for your newborn. With its temperature-regulating function, the lambskin ensures that your baby always feels comfortable in the stroller. Thanks to the natural fat lanolin, the baby lambskin also repels dirt and bacteria, which is why it is a harmless cuddly partner for babies. But many have some concerns when buying a baby lambskin, because how do you care for and wash such a product?
Don't worry! Below we have put together a mini care guide for you, so you can easily use the baby lambskin in the stroller or as a playmat.
How do I wash my baby lambskin?
If the baby lambskin does need to be washed, e.g., because the leather side has stains that cannot be removed, you can wash the baby lambskin in the washing machine. Normally, real lambskins should not be machine washed due to their tanning. Baby lambskins, however, are medically tanned and can therefore withstand a wash cycle in the machine.
So, how do you wash baby lambskin? Above all, carefully, gently, and as rarely as possible.
- Gentle washing. Do not wash the fur above 30 degrees and select the wool wash cycle if possible.
- The right wool detergent. Make sure to use the right detergent. We recommend using a wool detergent with lanolin.
- Drying. Lay the fur in a well-ventilated room on a drying rack with the leather side up to dry. Do not expose to direct sunlight or direct heat sources. Never tumble dry the baby lambskin.
- Extra tip. Pull the fur into shape while drying to maintain its natural form.
Once the fur is dry again, simply place it back in the stroller.
Do I need to wash the lambskin for my baby beforehand?
Many of our customers wonder if they need to wash the baby lambskin before use. Especially new parents want to make sure everything is absolutely clean and free of harmful substances. Since a baby lambskin is a natural product and ideally suited for babies and toddlers, it can be said that it contains no plastic or other harmful artificial substances. Therefore, it is not necessary to wash the baby lambskin before use, as nothing harmful would need to be washed out.
Our lambskins for babies are made to be perfect for the littlest fur friends. Are you considering buying a baby lambskin and still have questions? Then please feel free to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.
Baby Lambskin in Summer
Did you know that lambskin not only warms in winter but can also have a cooling effect in summer? Therefore, a baby lambskin in the stroller can be used all year round and is not only suitable for cold months.
The Secret: Air Cushion
A genuine lambskin has a natural air cushion. This means that air can circulate freely, which keeps the fur warm without making you too hot. As soon as air circulation is restricted, you easily start to sweat, and that is exactly what the lambskin prevents.
Because of the air cushion, a genuine lambskin is also ideal for summer. The heat that builds up between the body and the lambskin at higher temperatures is dissipated by the air cushion. So, if you sit on a lambskin cushion or lean against a lambskin in summer, you enjoy maximum comfort without sweating.
Baby Lambskin in Summer
Your baby will also lie perfectly on a lambskin in summer. Thanks to the air circulation, your baby won't sweat as quickly on a lambskin as on other materials. If your baby does sweat, for example due to high humidity, the lambskin quickly absorbs the moisture, so your summer baby doesn't lie wet. This breathability of the baby lambskin makes it ideal for babies, as they can regulate their body temperature at the beginning.
If your baby gets too warm, you can simply take the baby lambskin out of the stroller and lay it on the floor as a soft play mat instead.
Lambskin for Baby: yes or no?
A lambskin in the stroller offers many benefits for your baby. It not only provides comforting warmth in the cold months but also has a cooling effect in summer. The natural air cushion in the lambskin regulates the temperature and ensures that your baby always lies comfortably and pleasantly – without sweating or freezing. Thanks to the natural breathability of the lambskin, your baby feels comfortable and secure on every walk.
A lambskin in the stroller also offers the additional advantage that it does not impede air circulation. We do not recommend using our baby lambskin in the baby bed, as small hairs could get into your little one's mouth. Instead, a baby lambskin is ideal as a play mat or in the stroller, where you can always keep an eye on your baby. It is advisable to place a cloth under your baby's head, as this way you prevent your baby from getting hairs from the fur into their mouth.
Make sure to only use natural lambskins for your baby, such as our ecological New Zealand lambskin. Such a lambskin is excellent for the stroller or as a play mat, as it is gentle on your baby's sensitive skin. Remember that lambskins should not be used in the baby bed, as they could impede air circulation.
