5 simple tips for caring for a curly sheepskin

Curly sheepskins come in various forms, and each fur has its own characteristics. Tibetan sheepskins are known for their velvety soft corkscrew curls, while sheepskins from Austria have stronger and denser curls. Additionally, there are Gotland sheepskins, which have an incomparable structure and a charming grey tone.

1. Regular shaking

Both smooth-haired and curly sheepskins benefit from being shaken regularly. Shaking your fur removes dust and dirt and helps the fur maintain its soft look.

We recommend shaking your sheepskin at least once a month. If you sit on the fur frequently, you should shake it once a week or every two weeks.

2. Avoid vacuuming

To remove dust and dirt, it's tempting to get out the vacuum cleaner and give the fur a good clean. However, this is not the best approach – quite the opposite. Vacuuming can flatten the delicate curls. Therefore, we recommend only shaking curly lambskins thoroughly.

3. How do I remove stains from my sheepskin?

A real sheepskin is a beautiful natural product that can and should be used as a floor rug or a cuddly throw on the sofa! Therefore, stains can occur on the fur. If this happens, you should keep the following in mind.

The most important thing is speed. Especially when dealing with liquids, it is important to react quickly so that the leather side does not get soaked – or only minimally wet. Use a damp cloth and gently dab the stain. The stain should be removed immediately to prevent it from drying into the fur.

If you cannot remove the stain with water, you can dab it with a mixture of mild wool detergent with lanolin and lukewarm water. As much as possible, ensure that the sheepskin does not get soaked and that the skin side of the fur remains dry.

Once the stain is removed, shake the fur thoroughly and let it dry over a drying rack with the leather side facing up. Place it to dry in a well-ventilated room and away from heat sources.

4. Can I wash my lambskin?

Although the washing instructions for some furs claim that the sheepskin can withstand a cycle in the washing machine, we advise against it. We recommend using the washing machine only as a last resort.

This is because machine washing removes the salts often used in the tanning of the fur. This causes the leather backing to become hard, which is difficult to improve. In addition, the wool fat lanolin is also washed out of the fur, which – if not replenished – makes the hairs felt and look flat. You can replenish it with a wool detergent containing lanolin.

5. Can I recreate the curls of my sheepskin?

Over time, it often happens that the hairs straighten out and the curls disappear. But there's no need to panic, because with this simple trick, your sheepskin will be curly again.

Moisten your hands and grasp different areas of the fur to gently squeeze the hairs together. Be careful not to soak the fur. This way, the hairs of the sheepskin are moistened while the skin side remains dry.

Afterward, shake the sheepskin thoroughly and lay it to dry in a well-ventilated room – preferably over a drying rack with the leather side facing up. Avoid direct heat sources such as a radiator, as a sheepskin dries best naturally.

Once the fur is dry again, you will see the delicate curls return.
